The Event will take place from 10:30 am –2 pm on November 7th, 2010 at the beautiful new Central Park in Playa Vista . This one-of-a-kind event will be a competition of children and youth affected by developmental disabilities, from autism to Down syndrome to cerebral palsy. Because most of the children we serve struggle with social interaction, the Team Olympiad will focus on group efforts not individual achievement. The goal is to encourage participants to work together, support each other, and, mostly to have fun as a group. Participants on the team will also include children with no disabilities to enable interactions with peer models.
Activities for the Team Olympiad will be non-traditional and fun such as hoppy ball races and stomp rocket contests. Every child will receive a medal. There will be an Opening and Closing Ceremony, which will include a parade of teams across the stage. We will be entertained by cirque acts and a DJ as well as celebrity announcers. There will be carnival games, food booths, and informational booths featuring organizations and companies that work with children with special needs.
All proceeds will benefit the Leaps n’ Boundz Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by parents and coaches of kids with special needs. The Foundation provides financial assistance to children with special needs from low-income families, organizes adventure trips and camps for children with special needs and their families, and provides resources and activities that support, educate, and empower parents to advocate on behalf of their children.
